About the optimize tools

Tools that change how a PDF is stored, not what it says. Compress a file that is too big for an inbox or an upload form, repair one that refuses to open, or linearize it so the first page appears before the rest has downloaded.

  • Get under an upload limit

Compress PDF re-encodes images and strips unused data, with a quality setting you control.

  • Recover a broken file

Repair PDF rebuilds the internal structure of a damaged PDF so readers can open it again.

  • Publish on the web

Linearize PDF reorders the file for fast web view so browsers show page one immediately.

  • Archive lighter scans

Compress first, then run OCR PDF from the Convert family for small, searchable scans.

Questions about optimize tools

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what is inside. Scanned or image-heavy PDFs shrink the most; text-only files are already compact. You choose the compression level on the tool page.

Does compressing reduce quality?

The lighter settings keep images visually identical. The strongest setting lowers image resolution for the smallest possible file, which is ideal for previews and email.

What can Repair PDF fix?

Broken cross-reference tables, truncated downloads and files that readers report as damaged. It cannot recover content that is genuinely missing from the file.
